London Organic Growing

In partnership with our friends at Ascot Allotments in Ealing, West London, The Real Wood Workshop has provided financing and materials for two large allotment plots.

The first plot focuses on organic vegetable farming through wild-flowering, encouraging our most important of animal farmers, pollinating bees, back to urban landscapes, thus helping the broad range of vegetables to thrive.

The second allotment enjoys an orchard of vintage trees, shrubbery and bushes, all of which yield delicious fruits throughout the year, even during winter.

Produce from the spaces are shared amongst the local community, providing truly organic food, which for many is sadly unaffordable, becoming a trendy and expensive commodity.

Mini Forest Conservation, Latvia

Some of our best-selling veneer, birch wood, is sourced in the Baltics, specifically in Latvia, where it is indigenous.

The beautiful Latvian landscape, filled with deep forests, pristine lakes and Europe’s longest stretch of sandy beach, is sadly being eroded by deforestation. Ancient forests are being cleared and often, the remaining ground is left unsuitable for replanting due to the tangle of ancient roots embedded into the former forest floor.

We at the Real Wood Workshop have born witness to this saddening spectacle and wish to make amends however we can. We aim to put back what we take, and then go further still. We have immense privilege in co-ownership of a small forested area, in the municipality of Talsi, which contains a protected range of trees, mini lake (teeming with wildlife), wild flowers and an old wooden lodge.

Indeed the land and its trees inspired our logo. Our trees will never be felled and the land is being set-up with small sustainable glamping huts, composting toilets, solar and wind power and a natural sauna. The water is sourced from an underground natural spring, returning back to it after use. Once functioning, the spaces will be rented throughout the year, generating income which we hope will finance the purchase of more conservation areas which can be sustainably enjoyed and protected.

Why Our Chosen Brands

In addition to the above specific conservation efforts, the brands we offer in our store are chosen because they also share our concern for the environment, and have awareness of how the woodworking / construction industry’s is impacting it.

Our primary expertise involve wood veneer sheets, panels and edge banding. Veneer itself is an efficient use of tree wood, winning more material, using tried and tested manufacturing methods with high-tech low energy machining.

All of this mitigates the impact on the environment and at the same time offers more choice to the end user. Our veneer brand partner, WoodPress®, choose to specialise in veneers and melamine sheets, panels and edge banding for this reason alone, steering away from new industry demands which focus on heavy duty plastics, such as ANS and PVC to achieve the same. This focus not only helps the environment it ensures a quality built out of niche manufacturing.
