ANSWERS ABOUT OUR MELAMINE EDGE BANDING

MELAMINE IRON-ON EDGING FAQ

What can melamine edge banding be used for?

Melamine edging roll can be used to edge (or replace edging) on cabinets, doors, drawers, counter tops, tables – basically any type of furniture or fixture with a panel edge.

When activating the hot-melt glue (via heat), how quickly will the glue set?

Our pre-glued edging will remain sticky but not set fully within the first 1-2 minutes, allowing for realignment, should this be necessary. We do recommend, prior to activating the glue, affix the edging in place with some masking tape. Thereafter, remove the masking tape on the section to be fixed, before ironing that section on.

Can melamine edge banding be painted?

Yes, our melamine edging can be painted, using the correct paint, i.e. those made specifically for melamine surfaces. We also suggest using a sealant on gaps, such as polyurethane.

Does melamine edging need to be primed before painting?

Generally, no, it does not need to be primed prior to painting but do use the right type of melamine surface paint.

Can pre-glued melamine edge banding be applied without an iron?

An iron is not always the best tool for the job, like with tight corners or curved surfaces. Further, you might be concerned that the heat will damage a delicate edge / material underneath. In such circumstances, a simple hairdryer may be used to activate the hot-melt glue. We recommend using a cloth to press and fix the melamine edge banding into place thereafter. A smaller, weighted item, such as a metal tumbler can be used to press on to curved edges. Do take care not to overheat and burn the edging (or your hands!). A heat gun may burn the epoxy resin surface of the melamine, so this is not advised.

Is melamine edge banding water resistant?

If you need to apply to an area which encounters moisture, such as in the kitchen or bathroom, you can use our melamine edge banding, as the epoxy coating is indeed water resistant. You must seal the edge after application using an appropriate sealant. Melamine edge banding is not suitable for repairing chips to fixtures such as baths and sinks.

Is melamine edge banding weatherproof and can it be used on outdoor furniture?

Within reason, yes, provided the area which the melamine edging has been suitably sealed with a waterproof sealant.

How flexible is the melamine edge banding and can it be applied over curves, such as a routed edge?

Our melamine edging is malleable to gentle curves and should suit a routed edge. The product only has so much ‘give’ so for acute curves or angles, ensure you cut the edge banding and apply in sections.

What’s the best way to prepare a surface before applying melamine edge banding?

The edge banding can be applied to any surface, the obvious choice being wood. It will adhere to metal and glass surfaces as well, but this may not suit an iron-on application. For wood surface preparation, a light sanding will suffice, to key the area prior to application.

Does old edge banding strip need removal prior to application?

For best results we recommend removing any old edge banding and replacing with fresh edging. If this is not possible, due to the old edging being heavily glued, sanding down to an even edge might do the trick.

What is pre-glued melamine edging made from?

Melamine edge banding is a paper based roll whose top-side has been coated in epoxy resin. Epoxy provides a great solution, allowing heat to activate the glue, and thereafter providing a hard, durable surface. Furthermore, due to its makeup, melamine edge banding is environmentally friendly compared with ABS or PVC edging.

Why do you offer melamine edging rolls of 7.5m?

The 7.5m length covers the linear edge of a standard MDF board (8' x 4' / 2440 x 1220mm). This roll size can help our customers purchase the right amount of edging, dependant on the job at hand.

Can you make any width of melamine edging tape?

Our standard widths for melamine edge banding are 15mm, 19mm, 22mm, 30mm, 40mm and 50mm. Custom widths can be produced, but this would depend on a bulk order, carrying a minimum linear meterage.

Does the edging bend over edges if too wide?

For best results, it is common practise to purchase a tape which is slightly wider than the edge being applied to. Thereafter, an edge trimmer should be used to peel off the remaining edges and lightly sanded for a smooth finish.

Can you bend the edge banding over edges of melamine chipboard or particleboard to cover chips?

Particleboards are prone to chipping and damage. For best results, you shouldn’t bend melamine edge banding to cover chips along the edge. Instead, chips can be painted using epoxy resin, which can be colour matched to the board. If the chips are deep, use a mix of sawdust and wood filler to repair before applying the resin. Once repaired, the edging strip can be ironed on.

Can melamine edge banding be used on plywood?

Melamine edging will work on plywood. If the board edge has uneven areas, it should be prepped first using a wood filler and then sanding to create a smooth surface. Do check the filler applied can be heated slightly.

Can melamine edge banding be used on chipboard?

Melamine edging will also work on chipboard. If the board has an uneven edge, it should be prepped first using a wood filler and then sanded to create a smooth surface. Do check the filler applied can be heated slightly.

Can you use melamine edge banding on fabric, such as on a suitcase to cover a tear?

This is not recommended given the need to activate the edging using heat. Our melamine edge banding is designed for application to rigid edges.

Wood veneer edging roll can be used to edge (or replace edging) on cabinets, doors, drawers, counter tops, tables – basically any type of furniture or fixture with a panel edge.

Do you offer a colour matching service for wood veneer edge banding?

It is general hard to get a precise colour match for wood veneer, given it is a natural product, with rolls varying in tone and grain from tree to tree. Consider treating the edging with a wood stain, varnish or oil to blend with other surfaces. Keep in mind that cabinet and furniture edging is often hidden, so consider how much effort is required for a precise match, vs. a close match, which should be achieved by choosing the right species of wood.

When activating the hot-melt glue (via heat), how quickly will the glue set?

Our pre-glued edging will remain sticky but not set fully within the first 1-2 minutes, allowing for realignment, should this be necessary.
