Description

Introducing the WoodPress® quality real wood veneer 50 meter iron-on edge banding range. Also known as wood edging tape or veneer edging strip.

Sized for larger projects and repairs, the 50m edge banding roll is designed for professional use on projects which require edging for MDF, plywood or chipboard panels. With a thickness of 0.5mm, this edging tape can also be applied to curved edges.

The edges are pre-applied with glue using a special ‘Hot Melt’ formula, activated using a household iron on medium heat. The edging is easily applied by ironing on and then trimming. No specialist skills are required, and all DIY enthusiasts are welcome.

The WoodPress® veneer edge banding range offers for an assortment of wood species popular with furniture making, such as oak, beech, birch and maple. From oak cabinet doors to pine kitchen worktops to walnut shelving units, the range has something to offer. Wood veneer edge banding allows creativity with design when building, and speed and simplicity when undertaking repairs. As it is made of real wood veneer, the edge can be sanded, oiled, stained and varnished as desired.

Cover all household and office edges with this wood edging strip, used to finish or repair edges on plywood, MDF or chipboard. Further applications include home or office furniture panels, such as cabinets, shelves, kitchen units, kitchen tops, interior doors as well as table edges, picture frames, drawers, and musical instruments. We do recommend this veneer edging trim be used indoors; while it can be applied to outdoor furniture, it should be varnished and sealed accordingly. When applying to chipboard, we recommend the use of a wood filler if the edges are uneven.

WoodPress® iron-on wood edge banding is easy to use; simply measure your panel, cut the tape to size, and use a regular household iron at medium heat to activate the glue. Do take care, as the glue gets hot. Now trim any excess off with an edge trimmer or craft knife, and finish with a light sanding.

WoodPress® veneer edging tape is made of real wood sourced only from FSC registered forests. It is the ecological alternative to heavy-duty plastic-based edge banding (such as PVC or ABS), whose materials are not easily recycled or biodegradable. The Real Wood Workshop want to encourage you to repair rather than replace your old furniture and units. Use this wood edging tape to restore exposed or damaged edges, rendering an old unit like new while saving it from landfill! Restoring vintage furniture becomes possible with this wood edge banding.

This wood edging trim is designed to offer an easy, quick and cost-effective solution for professional carpenters, joiners, contractor and furniture makers.

Product FAQS
ANSWERS ABOUT OUR WOOD VENEER EDGE BANDING

REAL WOOD IRON-ON EDGING FAQ

What can wood veneer edge banding be used for?

Wood veneer edging roll can be used to edge (or replace edging) on cabinets, doors, drawers, counter tops, tables – basically any type of furniture or fixture with a panel edge.

Do you offer a colour matching service for wood veneer edge banding?

It is general hard to get a precise colour match for wood veneer, given it is a natural product, with rolls varying in tone and grain from tree to tree. Consider treating the edging with a wood stain, varnish or oil to blend with other surfaces. Keep in mind that cabinet and furniture edging is often hidden, so consider how much effort is required for a precise match, vs. a close match, which should be achieved by choosing the right species of wood.

When activating the hot-melt glue (via heat), how quickly will the glue set?

Our pre-glued edging will remain sticky but not set fully within the first 1-2 minutes, allowing for realignment, should this be necessary. We do recommend, prior to activating the glue, affix the edging in place with some masking tape. Thereafter, remove the masking tape on the section to be fixed, before ironing that section on.

Can wood veneer edge banding be painted?

Yes, our veneer edging can be painted, using any wood suitable paint. It can also be sanded, varnished, stained or be applied with wood oils.

Does wood edging need to be primed before painting?

Primer is recommended as wood veneer should be treated in the same manner as painting on any other wood surface.

Can wood veneer edge banding be used over an already painted surface?

This is not the ideal surface to apply the edge banding. We recommend first removing the paint (a scrapper, paint stripper, blow torch or sander will do this), and then sanding the under-surface in preparation for adhesion with the hot-melt glue.

Can pre-glued wood veneer edge banding be applied without an iron?

An iron is not always the best tool for the job, like with tight corners or curved surfaces. Further, you might be concerned that the heat will damage a delicate edge / material underneath. In such circumstances, a simple hairdryer may be used to activate the hot-melt glue. We recommend using a cloth to press and fix the edge banding into place thereafter. A smaller, weighted item, such as a metal tumbler can be used to press on to curved edges. Do take care not to overheat and burn the edging (or your hands!).

Is wood veneer edge banding water resistant?

If you need to apply to an area which encounters moisture, such as in the kitchen or bathroom, you can use our wood veneer edge banding, provided you coat the surfaces after application using an appropriate waterproof sealant or varnish.

Is wood veneer edge banding weatherproof and can it be used on outdoor furniture?

Within reason, yes, provided the edging has been coated using an appropriate waterproof sealant or varnish.

How flexible is the wood veneer edge banding and can it be applied over curves, such as a routed edge?

Our wood edging is malleable to gentle curves and should suit a routed edge. The product only has so much ‘give’ so do test first to see if the edging will curve without cracking. For acute curves or angles, ensure you cut the edge banding and apply in sections.

What’s the best way to prepare a surface before applying wood veneer edge banding?

The edge banding can be applied to any surface, the obvious choice being wood. It will adhere to metal and glass surfaces as well, but this may not suit an iron-on application. For wood surface preparation, a light sanding will suffice, to key the area prior to application.

Does old edge banding strip need removal prior to application?

For best results we recommend removing any old edge banding and replacing with fresh edging. If this is not possible, due to the old edging being heavily glued, sanding down to an even edge might do the trick.

What is pre-glued wood veneer edging made from?

The obvious answer is wood! However, it also receives a coat of hot-melt glue on the underside, and dependent on the wood species, sometimes fleece, which helps the wood to curve and roll.

Why do you offer wood edging rolls of 7.5m?

The 7.5m length covers the linear edge of a standard MDF board (8' x 4' / 2440 x 1220mm). This roll size can help our customers purchase the right amount of edging, dependant on the job at hand.

Can you make any width of wood edging tape?

Our standard widths for wood veneer edge banding are 15mm, 19mm, 22mm, 30mm, 40mm and 50mm. Custom widths can be produced, but this would depend on a bulk order, carrying a minimum linear meterage.

Does the edging bend over edges if too wide?

For best results, it is common practise to purchase a tape which is slightly wider than the edge being applied to. Thereafter, an edge trimmer should be used to peel off the remaining edges and lightly sanded for a smooth finish.

What if the edge needing coverage isn’t parallel in places, i.e. some areas are wider than others?

First measure the widest area of the edge. Then choose an edging roll which will cover this. Thereafter you can use an edge trimmer or craft knife to customise the edge as needed, not forgetting to sand to a fine finish. We offer pre-glued wood veneer edge banding between 15mm to 50mm width. We also offer unglued jumbo rolls of veneer at 135mm wide.

Can wood veneer edge banding be used on plywood?

Wood edging will work on plywood. If the board edge has uneven areas, it should be prepped first using a wood filler and then sanding to create a smooth surface. Do check the filler applied can be heated slightly.

Can wood veneer edge banding be used on chipboard?

Wood edging will also work on chipboard. If the board has an uneven edge, it should be prepped first using a wood filler and then sanded to create a smooth surface. Do check the filler applied can be heated slightly.

Can wood veneer edge banding be used to cover chips in wood style laminate flooring?

As a real wood product, it would not be suitable for repair to plastic or laminate flooring. In general edge banding is designed to cover an edge. However, for a quick solution, you could try using wider (30-50mm) wood style melamine edge banding, which can be found here.
